About Us

Start Right From the Beginning

She is an honors graduate of the world renowned San Francisco SPCA Dog Academy (now known as The Academy for Dog Trainers), is certified by the National Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and an associate member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.

Dorothy started Canine Concepts Dog Training in 2004 (now known as Puppy Learning Center) after having worked with dogs and dog owners for several years in both the shelter environment and conducting public dog training classes. Having seen firsthand why many dogs end up in the shelter, Dorothy is passionate about working with dogs and their people to start, enhance or repair the relationship with their dog using positive reinforcement training techniques. Recently she has decided to focus on the importance of early puppy development and training knowing that it plays such an extremely important and significant role in the adult dog’s quality of life.

Dorothy has studied directly under and/or attended seminars with such well known trainers, veterinarians and/or behaviorists as Suzanne Clothier, Jean Donaldson, Mike Shikashio, Monique De Roeck, Patricia McConnell and Kim Brophey, to name only a few.  Dorothy feels strongly that it is important to remain up to date on the latest developments and scientific advances in animal behavior and development, learning theory and the effects of different training methodologies. Over the years, several veterinarians in the area have referred their clients to both her classes as well as to her private individual behavior consults. Her emphasis on the importance of developing a relationship based on trust and mutual respect underlies her every interaction with dogs and animals of all kinds.

Currently Dorothy divides her time between focusing on providing and continually improving upon an in-depth puppy development program and doing private individualized behavior consultations for dogs of all ages who may be demonstrating inappropriate behavior. Any remaining time has been spent training and attending classes in Nosework, Agility and Obedience with her own now 10 year old German Shepherd dog, Hawks Hunt’s Joyful Spirit over Kenora, aka “Lady”. Dorothy lives in Marshfield, Massachusetts with her husband and Lady, having recently lost their 18 year old cat, Oolong.
